Abstract

Spiking networks are biologically-inspired or ‘neuromorphic’ systems which aim to emulate features of biological neuronal networks such as tolerance to failure, on-line learning, and very low power consumption. While many spiking networks are simulated in software on standard computing hardware, dedicated hardware is required to gain all the advantages of spiking networks. Under an AFRL-sponsored program, we have developed mrDANNA, a dedicated neuromorphic nanoelectronic platform for spiking networks. One key feature of mrDANNA is that connections between its spike-integrating neurons are encoded in a nanoscale resistive memory element (ReRAM). This allows for both very small footprint and lower power consumption. However, ReRAM is still a developing memory which can contain large levels of variability. In this work, we investigate the impacts of this variability in designing and executing spiking networks on physical neuromorphic hardware.
